Have You Heard About The “It Starts Today” Social Movement? Here’s Everything You Need To Know

It Starts Today

So, is “It Starts Today,” really a movement?

Yes! Don’t believe me? I know you believe Wikipedia, right? Well, according to Wikipedia,

Social movements are a type of group action. They are large, sometimes informal, groupings of individuals or organizations which focus on specific political or social issues. In other words, they carry out, resist or undo a social change.

We are carrying out a social change.

Who is we? And how did this start?

I grabbed a #, threw up a Facebook event, and asked, “who is on board?!”  But – it wasn’t me who started this.  It was YOU!  It was THEM! It was US! 2014 has been a year of reminders.  I’ve had a lot of lessons in life.  I know we all have, but sometimes the reminders teach us just as much! Personally, I was reminded of how inspiring it is to be around successful and like-minded people.  I was reminded that everyone is going through stuff and my stuff is not any more important than their stuff.  I was reminded that laziness is sometimes a passive-aggressive attempt to self-destruct, misery loves company, proactive beats reactive, and I’m still breathing.

All of those things are cause for some serious reflection, especially the part about still breathing.  Simply waking up in the morning was something I caught myself taking for granted. I often woke up already stressed about my pending to-do list.  I  was in a hurry and constantly aware of my struggles.  I told myself I wasn’t burdened by them, but I was.  I really was! Ironically, the struggles weren’t even the problem.  The real issue is that I used them as excuses to plan for tomorrow, instead of doing, today.  I’m not talking  about doing the ugly and unrealistic to-do list.  I’m talk about living like I believe that today actually makes a difference! Seeing my friends and family, both in my real life and virtual relationships, missing someone who didn’t wake up in the morning, being someone who didn’t wake up in the morning, or praying for someone to still wake up in the morning, blew my mind. Many of us think that the News is full of negativity and horrifically sad stories.  Certainly it is, but it’s not all some marketing plan to pull us into the 6 0’clock segment.  REAL stuff is happening to REAL people.  Every day.  All day. 2014 was my best ever year in regards to relationships.  I made more new ones, built stronger existing ones, and filtered out more bad ones than I ever have in my entire life! As I continued to apply a filter to my relationships, I was left with almost completely positive and healthy bonds.  Every day, everything, seemed just a little more possible.  I found myself surrounded by people rooting for my success. I was cheering them on, too.  They, you, we did amazing things so far this year.  We survived.

On November 1, 2014, I went to a local drug store to take advantage of their after Halloween sales.  The store had a full crew stocking shelves with Christmas stuff.  I got all excited about the Holidays.  Suddenly, I felt this strange sense of rebellion.  I didn’t want to get into the same Holiday spirit I always do.  I didn’t want to start thinking about New Year’s resolutions and all the things I didn’t do, but will do, next year.  I didn’t want to give in and give up.  I just wanted to keep going at the same pace I’ve been going, because it is really working for me. This year, I was reminded to forgive myself, every day.  That helped me start getting up and forgetting about yesterday, so I could embrace today.  It helped me hope for tomorrow but live for today.  Then, all I could think about is that #ItStartsToday.  I’ve built a “circle of friends” that builds each other up, pushes each other forward, and rejoices in each other’s successes.

So, you see, if it weren’t for all of you, I might still be waiting on tomorrow.

Did I ever tell you that from 2009 until 2013, I waited to start this website, because I was never ready?! I don’t think there was ever going to be a perfect time to start this site, so I did it at the worst time.  It worked out quite well!

OUR #ItStartsToday social movement is about taking positive action in your life, NOW! Share how you are making a positive change in your own life today, and inspire others to do the same. What ever your goals, dreams, and plans are: #ItStartsToday

Wait.  That’s it? I don’t get it.  What do I have to do?

Do whatever you want.  Be whatever you want.  Really.  It’s that simple. Keep doing what you’ve already done for me; SHARE, INSPIRE, LEAD! If we keep doing that, we WILL carry out a change that will bless many lives around us.  If you’re wondering what the hashtag is about, it’s just a vehicle for “social good.”  Use the hashtag whenever it’s appropriate, and it will catch on.  The inspiration will spread and multiply.  The change will occur, naturally.

To my many friends who have been life’s biggest blessings this year, thank you!

A very special Thank You and welcome to the people who have already joined the movement:

I love this, thanks for mentioning me & thank you for being YOU!

  2. Hello Alicia,

Great article :) I think I did the name/URL thing wrong up there. Anyways, I will be writing about this for my blog because I LOVE what you have written and I love helping people get through the “blah, leave it to tomorrow” (people who live a deferred life) stage and into action. I’ve been there myself, and quite honestly I still struggle with a procrastination-syndrome, but I am now much more aware of where I am at and how to show up to life fully.

Thank you for sharing this and starting this movement.

p.s. the link for the fb event was not working :)
