Emergencies-Happen-Hero

Family is the most important part of my life. I might complain and get tired of being tired, but I am blessed with a wonderful family.  There have been so many natural disasters all over the world lately, my senses and emotions are in an accelerated state. I have friends who are without a home, others who still have not located affected family members, and my heart is heavy. I am Puerto Rican. My husband is Mexican. I have friends and/or family in both places, as well as in FL, TX, NC, and GA. People are going through the hardest times of their lives right now and I’ve been thinking about how prepared we really are, because emergencies happen!

I know this, but it’s never quite sunk in the way it has recently.

What would I do if my family had to leave our home without notice, not knowing if it’d be there when we returned? Where would we go? What would we take? If you would have asked me this a week ago, I’d say we wouldn’t have made it across town because my vehicle was not prepared. We have a car and a van. The van is the only vehicle we have that can accommodate my entire family. (In case you’re new here, the story goes like this: We were a family of two, just my husband and I. Then we had two children and became a family of four. Unexpectedly, we had triplets, and became a family of seven. That’s the true story of how 24/7 Modern Mom was born!) Anyway, we’re a big family now.

Really, my van would not have gotten us out of the area in the case of an evacuation. So many people I care about have been forced to evacuate recently. I can’t assume that couldn’t happen to us. Emergencies happen all the time. Especially, lately. So, we took the van to the shop to take care of some of the mechanical issues and suspension work. Then, we put on new tires, changed the oil, and topped off all the fluids! Not only is the van ready to get across town now, it could get across the state if we needed to go! After all the money we spent getting the mechanical stuff fixed, I didn’t have a lot left over for routine maintenance, but that was okay!

Emergencies happen! My vehicle is ready. Is yours?

Do you have a gas can, flares, candles, portable chargers? What about all your most important papers, are they together? Could you pick up a box or bag and leave, knowing that the most important documents are there? Things that I took for granted before, like needed oil in my car, running low on gas, or running out of water are things I am taking more seriously than ever.

To all my friends and family who are still hurting, worried, scared, and affected by recent events, I am thinking of you! So many of you have shared tips and advice with other people, as you have been working through personal crisis. It’s so easy to think it can’t or won’t happen to us. But it has happened to so many people I love and care about.

If there is anything I can do to help, please let me know! How are you all holding up? Do you have friends or loved ones affected by these recent disasters? Let’s keep the positivity going and help each other in these difficult times!

All my love,

Alicia.
