Summer makes me happy and way-over-the-top a little sentimental. This time of year, nature is boasting it’s most beautiful colors, in plants, trees, fruits, vegetables and even, especially people. Summer is a happy time! The days are longer and we’re inspired to just do more. The best part of doing more is having people to share those moments with. Now that my triplets are growing up (about to enter K) they are making friends and going to birthday parties as guests. Hold that thought please, while I weep for a moment. During the school year, they brought me home flowers weeds, every day. I guess, because I always made such a big deal about it, flowers became one of their favorite gifts to give. After smothering them in celebratory hugs and kisses, they always made me a card. They LOVE cards. Almost no matter what they are drawing, when you ask them what it is, they’ll tell you it’s a card.
Last week, when I told them we were going card shopping for one of their friend’s birthdays, they absolutely had to have Minion cards for their friend. They didn’t want to give one card from all of them. They each wanted to give their own card. If you’ve been reading along, we’ve been a bit Minion crazy around here lately. They LOVE LOVE LOVE Minions. Where does anyone go when they want to find the perfect card? Yep! Hallmark, every time. Walmart has an emormous Hallmark section and that’s where we headed.
There was a whole section of new Minion cards, so we had no problem finding a different one for each of the kids to give.
They have the cutest messages, too! Hallmark is the best when you want to send smiles. They have such a variety of cards to choose from. Not only is there a card for everyone, there is a card for everyone’s budget. Some cards start as low as $0.047 cents! Check out how Hallmark can help you stock up on smiles, right HERE! The cards we got were just adorable on the outside and they were perfect on the inside, too.
It was such a sweet moment watching them decide which cards to pick.
It figures that they thought flowers would be the best thing to go with their cards. We decided they could give their friend a DIY flower vase and matching butterfly, plus the supplies to make their own. (With help from the mom, of course. We’re talking about five-year-olds, here.) Let me show you how to make them, too!
DIY Flower Vase
WHAT YOU’LL NEED:
- a clear plastic cup or watr bottle
- clothespins
- paint or nailpolish
- some type of gloss (optional)
- hot glue gun (with glue)
- scissors
INSTRUCTIONS:
Using a clear plastic cup or water bottle, cut around the “vase” down to the height you want.
Paint enough clothespins to surround the outside of the cup. I like to see a “V” facing me, but you can face them whichever direction you prefer. Let them dry.

Begin gluing the clothespins around the outside of your cup or bottle, making sure they are close to eachother.
Let the finished DIY flower vase dry. Add water and flowers!
My kids wanted to put on A LOT of gloss. I let them. Why not? When it dried, you could see clear while gloss in the holes of the clothespins. I loved it, just the way it was.
DIY Matching Butterfly
WHAT YOU’LL NEED:
- clothespin
- paint or nailpolish
- some type of gloss and/or glitter (optional)
- googly eyes, beads, or a permanent marker
- ribbon or pipewire

INSTRUCTIONS:
Paint your clothespin(s) and allow to dry.
Add a gloss or glitter, if desired.
Glue flower pedals to each side of the clothespin, right about where the clip indentation appears.
Add accent dots of color. Glue eyes and tentacles. Allow to dry.
No matter what age you are, there’s nothing like the personal touch of the perfect Hallmark card and DIY gift!
My own ALL TIME FAVORITE Hallmark Card is so sweet and simple, but I couldn’t have said it better myself. I gave that one to a good friend of mine. Read about it, HERE.
