Many who grew up with Tia and Tamera Mowry on Sister, Sister, now share their busy lifestyles with packed schedules and plenty of responsibilities to juggle. That’s why 24/7 Modern Mom™ was excited to chat with them about their newest venture, Need™, a product line for today’s woman who needs easy, affordable, stylish, and healthy solutions. The first product launched in May 2013. Milky!™ is an herbal tea supplement designed to enhance lactation that is easy to grab-and-go, tastes great, and is all natural.
The interview was as fast-paced as their schedules making it difficult at times to tell which twin was speaking until their very unique personalities began to emerge. It’s clear that regardless of how different they are, they share a passion for helping other Moms and their families!
24/7 MM: Your company, Need, recently launched the first product in May, called Milky! What do you hope this brand and its product will mean to consumers?
Tamera: We know what it feels like to be a new mom. Sometimes it’s overwhelming. We wanted to create products that moms need that are also natural, healthy, affordable, and stylish. We know how stressful life can be and we want moms to be able to focus on their families and rely on us to help them with what they really need.
Tia: We are very excited and passionate about helping moms. Stretchy, a stretch mark cream that will be available in July will be our next product, but we’re not stopping there. We want to be able to provide needed items for pregnant mom, post-partum, baby, toddler, pre-schooler, and daddy. We couldn’t find the things we needed, so we’re creating them!
24/7 MM: You have embraced marriage, motherhood, acting, and launching a business within a relatively short period of time. What has been your biggest challenge and how do you prioritize your time?
Tamera: I am still learning as I go. I have realized that I will never find 100% balance, so I take it a day at a time. Organization is a huge help. New moms also forget about “me” time. I think 30-45 minutes a day to clarify thoughts without interruption is important and I make sure to take that time. And I realize that it’s good to ask for help and let others be involved. I don’t have to do everything alone.
Tia: It’s all about prioritizing and communicating with my family. There’s no such thing as perfect balance. The key is to not get too overwhelmed, which can easily happen if you don’t get a break. I had to learn the hard way that I need an hour a day to focus on myself and rejuvenate. My husband or others can step in so that I don’t get run down.
24/7 MM: You have talked about having very different personalities. How has this helped or hurt you as business partners and as sisters?
Tamera: It hurt us because we experienced a couple of hiccups as business partners in the beginning. But in the end, it’s helped more than it’s hurt because we are two very different people and together, we can relate to a wide range of people. I’m a traditional mom and Tia is a modern mom. My style works for me and hers works for her, and I think people can relate to that.
Tia: We bring two different view and perspectives to every situation. We have learned to respect and learn from each other, and through that process, we have turned our differences into a huge advantage. It’s amazing and I think it helps our brand and our customers.
24/7 MM: You know you’re a mom when….
Tamera: You are dressed in your finest for a business meeting only to discover later that you have spit-up trailing down your back.
Tia: You rush out to the gym for an early morning workout only to find out once you get there that you grabbed your son’s sippy cup.
24/7 MM: If it could be planned, would you want to have twins?
Tia: Oh my Lord no!
And in those four words, Tia summed up something most 24/7 Modern Moms can relate to–that we love our lives and our children, but the thought of taking on one more thing might just be enough to tip us over the edge!
